FeelReal & 4Dx home theater: The inspiration behind Olorama VR scents

This is the story of how we found our motivation to create a revolutionary VR scent solution, inspired by groundbreaking technologies like 4DX theater and other multisensory experiences.

How it all began

Eight years ago, our journey to integrate scents into audiovisual experiences began. Our founder and CEO, Raúl Porcar, was watching a popular Spanish TV show, El Hormiguero, when a peculiar incident sparked his imagination. During the show, something exploded, releasing an unusual smell in the studio. The presenter remarked: “How I wish you could smell this at home like we do…”

This got Raúl thinking: “Why are our other senses so well-stimulated in audiovisual experiences, but not our sense of smell?” This question marked the beginning of our quest to create a system that could integrate scents into movies and VR experiences, both in theaters and at home.

Early inspiration: The rise of multisensory technology

In 2011, 3D movies were making a comeback, and theaters were upgrading their facilities to accommodate the new trend. While researching, Raúl came across earlier scent technologies like Smell-O-Vision, Aromarama, and iSmell, but none offered a solution that could be easily used to enhance 4DX movie theatre experiences or home setups.

By 2014, we launched the first commercial version of Olorama Technology, a groundbreaking system that allowed users to enjoy movies and VR with integrated scents. Along the way, we discovered other innovators, including FeelReal and 4DX theater.

2014: FeelReal and the VR scent revolution

FeelReal, a San Francisco-based company, introduced a VR mask with seven built-in scents, along with effects like air and heat. While their first crowdfunding campaign wasn’t successful, they raised $300,000 in 2019 via Kickstarter and Indiegogo.

Despite regulatory challenges with the FDA, FeelReal has persevered, promising to deliver their products once delays caused by COVID-19 are resolved. Like us, they are true believers in multisensory VR experiences, and we wish them the best in their journey.

2009: 4DX movie theatre innovation

The 4DX theater team revolutionized cinemas with immersive multisensory technology. With over 600 installations worldwide, their systems combine motion-enabled seats with effects like mist, punches, and vibrations to enhance action-packed scenes.

However, while 4DX movie theatre installations promote the inclusion of smells, we’ve noticed that in Spain, scents are often missing from the experience. This might indicate that scents are limited to specific countries or have been deprioritized in some locations.

Each 4DX home theater or cinema system is a significant investment, costing upwards of €30,000 per installation and accommodating fewer than 100 seats per theater. Despite this, their work continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in multisensory entertainment.

Conclusion: A shared vision for multisensory entertainment

At Olorama, we’re proud to be among the few companies that truly believe in the power of scents to transform user experiences. Watching others like FeelReal and 4DX theater pursue similar goals is inspiring, and we’re confident that user interest in these technologies will continue to grow.

Congratulations to FeelReal and 4DX movie theatre pioneers—keep pushing the boundaries of multisensory experiences!
