Ambergris

According to Eduard Punset (1936 – 2019), intuition is much more decisive than reason… The space that intuition ocuppies in our brain is much bigger than the one ocuppied by the reason. Punset ensures that “people don’t reason”, people “react emotionally”…

This explains why brands work with fragances since few years ago… They try to reach the emotional part of their customers…

Olorama isn’t a new neuromarketing company… Olorama is a Digital Scent Technology to provide complete and more immersive VR experiences to the audience with one aim: through a positive (and more immersive) experience, your brand will reach a good position in the market naturally…

And this results perfect to discuss something: the ambergris.

If you find something similar to this in the beach then you may be rich:

Ambergris

The price of 1Kg of ambergris ranges between 50.000 – 100,000$. This price is higher than gold…!

But… What is ambergris? So nothing less than the substance produced at the digestive system of sperm whales…

The important thing is that this substance (solidified), is very appreciated by “First class” perfumists, due to it’s used as a fixative (particles incorporated into fragances, to create more lingering products).

Actually, the way you can identify ambergris and do not confuse with a single rock is ambergris releases a strong odor (not very pleasant), which slowly dissipates after a few weeks (that’s why the price of the Kg is variable).

Anyone reading this article must be wondering: “If it’s smelling badly, why it’s so appreciated? and why it’s so expensive?”… Ok, the reason must lead you to read this article… Good smells dissapear rapidly (they are not a threat for us), but bad smells linger even during hours… and many times we have (literally) to clean our nose, which is not efficient, as the information is already in our brain, which will be reminding the bad odor constantly…

Powerful perfume brands can hide the bad odor of ambergris and incorporate it into their products, preserving its fixative properties in our brain… This is the reason why ambergris is so appreciated (if that were a matter of adding bad odor particles, all of us have in mind what is very cheap and has a nasty smell…), but ambergris can be camuflated in the fragances and respect the notes the perfumist want to transmit, providing a more perdurable fragance…

Another typical substance (much cheaper) used in fragance brands is musk… Musk is tipically extracted from genitals of animals (remember how important is the smell in sexual attraction in the wild) such deers (or even rats!)… But the king in olfactive fixation is ambergris… this justifies the high cost…

The smells provided by our professional scent generators don’t include fixatives or other components designed “to linger”… Thanks to this we can provide very intense and realistic smells, but they are volatile, and evaporates after some seconds… You can download our Smell Library here.

Have a great smelling week!
