The origin of musk
Musk is extracted from the genital glands of a specific deer, the musk deer, an specimen found in the Tibet, China and Nepal… These glands on the male individual emit a very strong and penetrating smell during the mating season…
For extracting these glands hundreds of deers were killed until found… With the glands they created a powder which was diluted in essential oils or ethanol… A very small quantity is enough due to it’s very intensive… After some years, it was obvious that this practice was cruel and awful, and was prohibited by the authorities, allowing the development of alternatives such synthetic or vegetal versions of these molecules…
What’s the white musk?
It’s just the synthetic version of the glands of the musk deer… In perfumery, it’s also employed “musky notes” of vegetal origin extracted from plants such wild celery, hibiscus, musk geranium or mimilus…
This white musk is created through synthesis… The word “white” is only to express the difference with the animal version… “Muscone” is the synthetic molecule which provide the name to White Musk.
